TWO of Worcester’s parks have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag award.
The award puts Gheluvelt park, in Barbourne, and Cripplegate park, in St John’s, among the best in the country.
Judges were impressed by the excellent use of green space, well-maintained facilities and high standard of safety and security at both sites.
Simon Geraghty, leader of Worcester City Council, said: “I’m delighted that once again we will be flying the Green Flag at more than one of our beautiful parks.”
A record 1,200 Green Flags and Green Pennants - given to green spaces managed by a community or voluntary groups - were awarded across the UK, compared to 1,013 in 2009.
Green Flags can be awarded to a park which is both free to enter and open to the public.

The Master Mariners Benevolent Association invites you to get a close look at some great classic boats and learn a bit of nautical history at their annual wooden boat show at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, CA. There are generally 60 vessels on display in the show. This year several boats from the local chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association will also be on display -- skiffs, dories, whitehalls -- as well as some classic wood work boats. A lively jazz band will be playing and there will be activities for children on the deck, making it a great outing for the entire family. Refreshments and a BBQ will be available. Boat show proceeds go towards the Master Mariners Benevolent Fund which provides funding for sail training scholarships and skills associated with restoring traditional sailing craft. A number of awards for boats will be given including the Stone Cup, Corinthian Cup, and Peoples' Choice. Admission is $10 for adults, free for children under 12 accompanied by an adult.

The Herald Tribune reports from Florida. “Like so many other new home builders, Adams Homes of Northwest Florida was left holding a lot of inventory in Sarasota and Charlotte counties when the housing market started its swoon heading into 2006. But like few others, the Gulf Breeze-based builder was able to survive that blow and has made a remarkable recovery. But Adams Homes is a relative babe in the woods in Sarasota and Charlotte counties, markets the company entered in late 2004 to take advantage of the Southwest Florida’s rampant flipping during the housing boom.”
“‘Everything was selling. That is the way it was at the time and we just continued to sell and sell and people thought they were going to flip forever because houses were going up $10,000 in value every month,’ said Nancy Carroll, the company’s North Port-based sales manager. ‘Since we build with $1,000 down they would come in with $10,000 and buy ten homes. It all came to a screeching halt in January of 2006 — and then they wouldn’t close on them.’”

Maximizing new home energy efficiency doesn’t require ideas that may pay off literally somewhere down the road. We can reduce energy use and emissions on every single-family home constructed today by as much as 75 percent or more with just the skills and materials at hand.
To be sure, it’s not an easy sell. We’ve had energy codes for years and there’s an entrenched system for regularly upgrading them incrementally. Making sudden radical improvements in the midst of the one of the worst housing and economic cycles in history is not going to be well received by builders and home buyers. Many of them would argue that it would be better to focus on improving the efficiency of existing homes, which account for 98 percent or more of the housing in any year.
Yet, none of these arguments make sense. Saying a home meets energy codes means even less than saying it meets building codes. They’re minimum standards left up to states and local government to implement and they mostly ignore them, no matter the nature and number of code advances.
Only eleven states – California, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island – have adopted the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code. Pretty soon we’ll ready for the next one, in 2012.

New York City's most famous purveyor of soup, made famous after he inspired Jerry Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi" character on the popular TV show, reopened his original Manhattan stall yesterday on West 56th near 8th Ave. But the original soup nazi, Al Yeganeh did not show up for the celebrations.

Yeganeh - who calls himself "The Original SoupMan", detests the "Soup Nazi" character" - despite it no-doubt being good for business (after the original location closed in 2004, he opened another 22 shops and served up his soups online) and banned Jerry Seinfeld from his stall after the infamous episode aired in November 1995.
One of the better, if not greatest Seinfeld episodes, Soup Nazi has got us wistfully reminiscing back on one of the great NYC shows - even if it was actually filmed on a sound stage in LA.
